Let’s be honest—rainy or snowy days with kids can feel like an eternity if you don’t have a plan, especially in a small northern Michigan town. But thankfully, Traverse City has a few indoor activities to keep little ones entertained when the weather isn’t cooperating. While my personal favorite indoor activity is walking around Target with a Starbucks in hand, there are plenty of other great options for family fun. Whether your kids need to burn off energy, get creative, or just enjoy a cozy afternoon, here are some of my personal suggestions to keep them busy when it’s too wet or cold to play outside.

1. COGNiTiON Science and Discovery Center

If your kids love to explore and learn, COGNiTiON Science and Discovery Center in Beulah is worth the short drive from Traverse City (or if you are staying near Sleeping Bear Dunes, even better!) This hands-on science museum features interactive exhibits on physics, biology, engineering, and more, making it a perfect spot for curious minds to stay engaged while having fun indoors.

2. The Newly Renovated Children's Museum

If you are near the Grand Traverse Mall, check out the newly renovated Great Lakes Children's Museum! With hands-on exhibits designed for interactive learning and play, this is a great spot for toddlers and young kids to explore, create, and discover.

3. Friske’s Farm Indoor Play Space

A small drive from Traverse City (near Charlevoix) Friske’s Farm Market is known for its outdoor fun in warmer months. However, their newly installed indoor play area is a hidden gem for rainy days. Kids can climb, slide, and run around while parents relax with a warm coffee and a homemade donut from the market. The area is fenced in, so sometimes parents bring a laptop.

4. Incredible Moe's

For a little bit of everything, Incredible Mo’s is a fantastic option. This entertainment center features bowling, laser tag, an arcade, and even an indoor play structure for younger kids. Plus, their on-site restaurant makes it easy to grab a meal while you play!

5. The Traverse Area District Library

A cozy day with books? Yes, please! The Traverse Area District Library is a fantastic place to escape the rain. Their children's section has puzzles, games, and comfy reading nooks, and they often offer storytime events or activities for kids.

6. The Coin Slot – A Vintage Arcade Experience

For something a little different, head to The Coin Slot in downtown Traverse City. This vintage arcade is filled with classic pinball machines, retro video games, and fun for all ages. It’s a great way to introduce your kids to some old-school gaming while reliving a little nostalgia yourself.

7. K1 Speed – Indoor Go-Karts

For thrill-seeking kids (and adults), K1 Speed offers an exciting indoor go-kart experience. This high-speed racing venue is great for older kids, family outings, and even team-building events. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, this is the place to go!

8. Elevate – Indoor Climbing Gym

For a fun and active adventure, check out Elevate Climbing and Fitness. This indoor climbing gym offers climbing walls for all skill levels, making it a great way for kids to challenge themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

9. The State Theatre – Catch a Matinee

For a relaxing afternoon, check out a family-friendly movie at the historic State Theatre in downtown Traverse City. They often offer discounted matinees and a cozy atmosphere, making it a great way to enjoy a rainy day indoors.

10. Hands-On Art – Get Creative!

If your kids love crafts, Hands-On Art is a fantastic place to spend a few hours painting pottery, creating canvas art, or trying other DIY projects. It's a great way to encourage creativity and come home with a fun keepsake.

Bonus! The Germ Tree at the Grand Traverse Mall

Previously mentioned, Grand Traverse Mall is a great place to escape the rain with kids. While there aren't many stores left at the mall, many locals take their kids to the germ tree (it is what it is), a small indoor play structure for little ones, for when you are just going absolutely crazy. Be aware, it's really nothing special, but my young kids still love to go there and socialize!
