What to Expect During Your Newborn Session

Newborn sessions are relaxed and natural. The focus is on capturing the sweet, delicate details of your baby, your family’s connection, and those quiet, intimate moments. The session typically lasts 1-2 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and breaks as needed.

Scheduling Your Session

Ideally, newborn sessions are best scheduled when your baby is between 5-14 days old, as babies are generally sleepier and more flexible for posing. However, don't worry if your baby is outside this window—the session can still be beautiful at any age! It’s important to reach out soon after your baby arrives to book your session, so we can find a date that works for you.

Preparing for the Session

  1. Prepare the Space: If your session will take place in your home, it’s a good idea to warm up the room to around 75-80°F. A cozy, warm space helps keep your baby comfortable and sleepy during the shoot.
  2. Feed Your Baby: Feeding your baby just before the session begins ensures they’re calm and relaxed, which makes it easier to capture those sweet, sleepy moments.
  3. Declutter the Area: Clear the space where we’ll be shooting to minimize distractions in the photos. A tidy space helps focus attention on your baby and family while keeping the overall aesthetic clean and beautiful.

Lighting

Natural light is ideal for newborn sessions, as it creates soft, airy, and timeless images. If the session is happening in your home, I’ll look for areas with plenty of natural light, such as by large windows. If the light is dim, I may use a gentle flash to brighten the room. For outdoor sessions, shaded areas work best to avoid harsh sunlight.

What to Wear

The clothing you choose is key to achieving a clean, timeless look for your photos. Here are some tips for everyone in the family:

  • Parents: Stick to neutral colors like white, beige, light gray, or soft pastels. Light, airy fabrics like cotton or linen work well and give a relaxed, natural feel. Avoid bold patterns and logos to keep the focus on your family’s connection.
  • Siblings: For older siblings, opt for simple outfits in neutral tones to match the family’s aesthetic. Soft dresses, rompers, or simple onesies work great. Avoid overly busy patterns to maintain a minimalist look.

Props and Outfits

Props are completely optional, but if you’d like to include personal items like a favorite blanket or stuffed animal, feel free to bring them! I’ll also have a few simple, neutral props and blankets on hand to add texture and warmth to the images. For newborns, soft wraps, hats, or headbands can be sweet additions, but again, simplicity is key to keeping the focus on your baby’s natural beauty.

During the Session

The session will be relaxed, with breaks as needed for feeding, diaper changes, or soothing. We’ll capture a variety of shots, including photos of just the baby, as well as family portraits with everyone. I may incorporate natural poses with the baby, like swaddling or gently laying them in baskets or blankets. Don’t worry if your older children aren’t fully cooperative—they’re welcome to take breaks, and I’ll adapt to their energy to make sure everyone feels comfortable and involved.

After the Session

Once the session is complete, I’ll carefully select and edit the best images to create your gallery. These photos will capture the essence of this special time, with soft, timeless tones and natural compositions. When the gallery is ready, you’ll have access to view, download, and share your images.

Final Thoughts

This is such a special time for your family, and I’m thrilled to be able to capture it for you. If you have any questions or need help with preparations, don’t hesitate to reach out. The most important thing is to relax, enjoy the moment, and let me handle the photography!

I look forward to creating beautiful, lasting memories with you and your newborn.
