Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the most beautiful spots in Michigan and a must-see destination for families. With its large sand dunes, crystal-clear waters, and never-ending scenery, it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. But beyond the views, there are tons of exciting things to do in the area, especially for families with kids! Besides a photo shoot to document your trip with Lauren Alyssa Photography (always a great idea!), here’s a list of must-do activities that will make your trip unforgettable.
1. Dune Climb
The Dune Climb is one of the most iconic activities in Sleeping Bear Dunes. This giant dune offers sweeping views of Lake Michigan and a real adventure for kids and adults alike. It’s a great place to let off some energy by running up and sliding down, but be prepared for a bit of a workout! Once you reach the top, the views are well worth the effort.
2. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center
Start your visit with a trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes Visitor Center to learn more about the history and ecology of the area. The museum offers interactive exhibits that engage kids while providing a wealth of information about the dunes, wildlife, and local history. Plus, it's a great place to grab maps, trails, and other resources for your trip.
3. Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor
Head to Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor, a charming local gem offering all things cherry! From delicious cherry-themed snacks and treats to souvenirs, kids will love exploring this fun, family-friendly shop. Don’t forget to sample their famous cherry products like cherry jam, cherry soda, and, of course, the irresistible cherry ice cream. There is a restaurant on-site too, and we love their fries with the cherry rub seasoning!
4. River Club Mini Golf
While you're in Glen Arbor, make sure to stop by the River Club Mini Golf for some classic family fun. This charming mini-golf course is perfect for kids of all ages, offering a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful views of the river and surrounding nature. It’s a great way to unwind after a day of hiking the dunes or enjoying the beach.
5. The Old Coast Guard Station Museum
Explore the Old Coast Guard Station Museum in Glen Arbor, where kids can learn about the area's maritime history and the role the Coast Guard has played in keeping the waters safe. The museum showcases life on the Great Lakes, featuring exhibits on shipwrecks, rescue missions, and old equipment. It’s a great spot for history buffs and an interesting stop for all ages.
6. The Sleeping Bear Dunes Museum
If your family is interested in the history of the area, a stop at the Sleeping Bear Dunes Museum is a must. This museum is filled with interesting exhibits about the dunes' natural history, Native American heritage, early settlers, and more. It’s both educational and entertaining, with hands-on activities for younger visitors.
7. Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
Take a leisurely drive on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a 7.4-mile loop that offers stunning views of the dunes, Lake Michigan, and the surrounding forests. There are several stops along the way with short trails and viewing platforms, allowing you to experience the beauty of Sleeping Bear Dunes from various vantage points. The Lake Michigan Overlook is especially popular for its breathtaking views.
8. Empire Bluff Trail
For a family friendly hike, head to the Empire Bluff Trail. This 1.5-mile trail offers a beautiful climb to a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. It's a relatively short hike but offers rewarding views of the coastline and surrounding wilderness. Perfect for families with kids who are ready for a bit more of an adventure!
9. Empire Beach
Enjoy some family fun at Empire Beach, where you’ll find not only beautiful shoreline and clear water but also two playgrounds for the kids to enjoy. After some playtime at the beach, let the kids burn off more energy on the playgrounds, making it an ideal spot for a picnic or relaxing afternoon.
10. North Bar Lake
For a more secluded beach experience, head to North Bar Lake, a hidden gem tucked behind the dunes. This shallow, warm lake is perfect for families with young children as it’s more calm and safe for wading and swimming. You can walk to the lake from the parking area, where you’ll be rewarded with peaceful scenery and a relaxing atmosphere.
11. Crystal River Kayak & Canoe Trips
This is one of my family's favorite things. Head to the Crystal River in Glen Arbor for a kayak or canoe trip. Crystal River Outfitters offer rentals so you can paddle along this scenic river. The gentle flow of the river (and it's super shallow) makes it an ideal choice for families with younger kids, and you’ll get to experience the area's natural beauty from a whole new perspective.
