Nestled along the picturesque shores of Lake Michigan, just 30-40 minutes outside of Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is truly a hidden gem. With its majestic sand dunes, tranquil beaches, and sweeping views of the lake, it’s one of my favorite places to shoot, and I always feel this calm, magical energy in the air. It’s the perfect spot to capture timeless family memories, and I was lucky enough to work with a family who traveled from out of state to visit this incredible location for the first time.

When mom Jamie told me they had their heart set on a place that showcased the beauty of the area, I knew Sleeping Bear Dunes would not disappoint. From the view of the dunes to the crystal-clear water, it’s impossible to take a bad photo here. I love how the landscape adds such a natural, film-inspired quality to the images—everything just feels so serene and breathtaking.

I love sessions here and this was no exception. We had the best blend of perfect weather and the joy of children exploring the beach, discovering shells and Petoskey stones. It was such a peaceful and fun environment to capture these moments. The children didn’t just want to sit still for the camera—they wanted to explore, and I was all for it! I always tell parents to relax and enjoy the moment. Some of my favorite shots are the candid ones, the ones that show the natural joy and wonder of kids being kids. Of course, we got some posed shots too, but the real magic happens when they’re just being themselves.

If you’re planning a family session at Sleeping Bear Dunes, here are a few tips to make the most of it:

  • Plan for some exploration: Kids love to explore the beach and dunes, so let them wander. You’ll get some amazing candid shots of them discovering the beauty of the area.
  • Dress comfortably: All the sand can be a little tricky to walk through, so make sure everyone is in comfortable shoes (or barefoot!) and outfits (ask about my client closet!) that allow for movement.
  • Time your session for golden hour: The sunsets here are late during summer, but it's worth it to wait! The light at sunset is best for soft, golden toned photos.
